Abstract

In response to rising concerns over mental health in the workplace and its impact on productivity, the Corporate Sports League initiative was developed. This project was designed to address the significant economic losses—estimated at US$ 1 trillion annually—due to depression and anxiety disorders causing absenteeism and reduced productivity. Using a combination of physical activities and social interactions, the initiative aimed to improve employees' mental health and increase overall productivity. Results from the implementation show a marked improvement in both employee well-being and job performance, supported by the SEE Impact Evaluation.

Outline of Implementations

  1. Weekly Sports Events: Organized team sports events held weekly to encourage physical activity among employees.

  2. Mindfulness and Wellness Workshops: Monthly workshops focusing on mental health, including stress management and mindfulness.

  3. Peer Support Groups: Facilitated sessions where employees can share experiences and strategies for managing stress and enhancing well-being.

  4. Health Tracking: Use of wearable devices to monitor and provide feedback on physical activity levels and overall health metrics.

Objectives

  • To decrease workplace-related mental health issues by 30% within the first year.

  • To boost overall employee productivity by at least 10%.

  • To increase employee engagement and satisfaction rates by fostering a supportive community.

Phase 1: Launch and Establish Core Activities

Implementation:

  • Weekly Sports Events: Initiate regular sports events to promote physical activity.

  • Mindfulness and Wellness Workshops: Start monthly workshops to educate and engage employees on mental health topics.

Objectives:

  • For Weekly Sports Events: Engage at least 50% of employees in regular physical activities to foster teamwork and reduce stress.

  • For Mindfulness and Wellness Workshops: Equip 75% of participating employees with basic mindfulness and stress management techniques.

Phase 2: Enhance Support Systems and Feedback Mechanism

Implementation:

  • Peer Support Groups: Facilitate monthly meetings where employees can discuss and share personal experiences related to workplace stress.

  • Health Tracking: Implement the use of wearable devices to monitor physical activities and vital health metrics.

Objectives:

  • For Peer Support Groups: Achieve a consistent participation rate, with at least 30% of employees actively involved in peer support groups.

  • For Health Tracking: Ensure 70% of employees regularly use wearable devices, providing actionable health data to both employees and the HR department for better health management.

Phase 3: Evaluate Impact and Scale

Implementation:

  • SEE Impact Evaluation: Conduct comprehensive Social, Economic, and Environmental Impact Evaluations to measure the effectiveness of the implemented activities on employee health and productivity.

Objectives:

  • General: Demonstrate a 30% reduction in reported workplace-related mental health issues and a 10% increase in overall productivity.

  • Specific for Evaluation: Use SEE Impact Evaluation findings to refine programs, address areas needing improvement, and identify successful strategies that can be scaled or replicated in other company locations.

Methodologies

  • Surveys and Feedback Forms: Regular collection of employee feedback to assess mental health and satisfaction levels.

  • Physical Activity Monitoring: Utilizing smart technology to track and encourage regular physical activity among employees.

  • SEE Impact Evaluation: Employing the Social, Economic, and Environmental Impact Evaluation framework to measure the broader impacts of the initiative on employee health and company productivity.

Outcomes

The initiative has led to:

  • A reduction in stress among participating employees.

  • Improved social bonds and teamwork, attributed to regular and structured team sports and social activities.

Future Implications

The promising results of the Corporate Sports League suggest potential for scaling up to include more diverse activities and larger participation across different office locations. Future enhancements could involve integrating more personalized health tracking and adaptive challenges to meet varying employee needs. Additionally, collaboration with mental health professionals can be expanded to provide more comprehensive support frameworks. These improvements and expansions have the potential to further enhance productivity and well-being in the workplace.
